Government spends $18 million dollars redesigning web site

Recovery.gov is a website the Obama administration started so Americans can see where the federal stimulus money is being spent. The White House plans to spend 18 million dollars redesigning the money-tracking site.

Many web designers say that is an outrageous number. A local web design firm has come up with a proposal for the White House, they’ll redesign recovery.gov for a fraction of the price.

Many wonder what a $18 million web site would even look like.

“You know, it’s a website with gold on it or something like that or platinum. It’s crazy, no I don’t think it’s good,” said Cedric McGinnis of Wilmington.

“That’s the reason the economy is in the shape that it’s in is for reasons like that,” said Sharon Whitehurst.

Web designers at Inspire Creative Studios, came up with a plan to save some tax payers some money. They’ve offered to charge the White House just $1 million to redesign recovery.gov.

“Well we love this country, and if it means making a measly million dollars, sign us up,” said Jonathan Medford of Inspire Creative Studios.

The government has awarded the contract for the website work to Maryland firm Smartronix, but Smartronix’s website doesn’t even mention web design as one of its specialties.

“But they did a website, we looked it up they did a website in 2007…so that was good, it was probably a pretty good website,” said Curtis Thieman of Inspire Creative Studios.

Smartronix has already hired three subcontractors to help with the web design. Since the White House gig is already spoken for, the designers at Inspire Creative Studios hope ‘plan b’ will come through for them.

“If nothing else, maybe the government can hire us to design a site that will track the $18 million tracking site,” Thieman said.

How does FDIC insurance work?

That is a great question. FDIC insurance can be confusing. I will try and clear up some of the misconceptions and explain how it works.

The FDIC, or Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is a government agency that insures deposits, or money, at banks and other institutions.

The limit for FDIC insurance was $100k, but was increased in 2008 to $250k. That was good news for people with more than $100k in a bank.

Here is how the FDIC insurance works.

The $250k limit is per account holder, and per institution.

First, per account holder does not mean per person. You could have an individual account, and a joint account. Both accounts could be covered, meaning your individual account could be covered up to $250k, and your joint account could be covered up to $250k. That’s a total of $500k of coverage for the same person because they h that person has two different accounts. Again, this is per account holder, and an individual account is considered separate from a joint account

Next, it is per institution. You could have covered accounts at different banks. Some people have CDs at different banks for this very reason. A person with multiple accounts at multiple banks could have every account covered assuming they had different forms of ownership.

Be careful, a different branch with the same bank does not count. A different bank means a different company. Having money at three branches of the same bank does not triple your protection. If you are unsure about the coverage, go to www.fdic.gov, or just call your bank and ask them.
