There’s no telling what you’ll find when you open a sewer manhole.Roaches and tree roots are usually a given. Other than that, it’s anyone’s guess: Dentures. Medical needles. Monstrous balls of supposedly flushable wipes and baby diapers. Globs of oil and grease coating the walls of a pipe like cholesterol in an artery.

Blended city, county utility’s record mixed in its first year

The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority has a skeptical public to win over. In April, the N.C. Institute of Political Leadership polled 300 county voters. Only 26 percent of those surveyed approved of the authority’s performance.
