Butterfield holds town hall on Obama health plan

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — One of North Carolina’s strongest backers of President Obama in Congress is holding a town hall meeting to discuss health care reform.

U.S. Rep. G. K. Butterfield’s district in the state’s northeast corner is one of the state’s most secure. He’ll discuss the hottest-button issue in Washington on Tuesday.

Conservative critics have used such public forums to express their anger about efforts to alter the U.S. health care system. Democrats say the conservatives are trying to make a point by disrupting the events and trying to shame Congress members.

U.S. Reps. David Price, Brad Miller, and Bob Etheridge held a private discussion of health care Monday. Rep. Heath Shuler holds a telephone news conference on the subject Thursday.

NEWTON, N.C. — Target Corp. is officially opening its new distribution center in western North Carolina.

Officials will gather Tuesday morning for a ribbon-cutting at the facility in Newton. Target held a job fair in March, and officials have said the site will employ around 400 workers. More may be added later.

The region has been decimated in recent years by job losses, particularly in textile and furniture industries. The unemployment rate in Catawba County was 15.5 percent in June.

The distribution center will serve Target stores in northern North Carolina and parts of Virginia. Minneapolis-based Target has 1,719 stores in 49 states.

CHARLOTTE — The superintendent of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools is expected to provide details of plans to rehire teachers and other laid-off employees to the school board.

The Charlotte Observer reported that Superintendent Peter Gorman has said the state tax increases will let him rehire “a substantial number” of the 665 teachers laid off earlier this summer. He’s expected to provide details of a rehiring plan to the board Tuesday.

As of the end of June, the school system had laid off almost 1,200 people from a work force of more than 19,000. Some have been rehired already as vacancies occurred.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools are scheduled to open Aug. 25.
