As the battle over health care reform rages on in Washington, community members continue to fight for health care here in Wilmington.

Many local organizations, including Cape Fear Citizens for Health Care and RISE Community gathered at Hugh MacRae Park Sunday urging citizens to get involved and support reform.

Supporters say that the time for change is now, and that health insurance reform is a big problem that is going to require a big change to fix.

“I understand the concern. It’s a huge problem. It’s a huge issue,” said Allie Nardella of RISE Community. “And so it is going to require a great change, but it’s a change that needs to happen. We really need to do this now, and again, what are we waiting for? If not now, when?”

The event featured live music and food. It was part of the kick-off for the National Hands Across America for Healthcare campaign.

Study: Buxton best area in NC for wind energy

BUXTON, N.C. — A new study says the best spot for utility-scale wind energy is in the Pamlico Sound off Buxton along North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk reported that feasibility study found most other state waters aren’t suitable for wind-energy development. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
conducted the study, which was requested last year by Dare Sen. Marc Basnight.

The study is to be unveiled at a state Coastal Resources Commission meeting Thursday.

The nine-month study analyzed the areas of available wind power, the ecological risks, user conflicts, electrical transmission infrastructure, regulatory barriers and carbon reduction potential.

By Shannan Bowen, Shannan.Bowen@StarNewsOnline.com

It’s a familiar scene by now: People wander in after work – some are faces I see in person quite a lot, some I know I’ve seen somewhere.I stand around the ones I know, chatting about the day’s news and what we’ve been up to. Then the newcomers put on their name tags with name and Twitter handle, and that’s all the introduction they need.

More information in the shooting at Senator RC Soles home

Monday, August 24th, 2009

A lone Columbus County Sheriff’s deputy blocked the private road leading to RC Soles’s home outside Tabor City Sunday night. A quarter-mile or so up the private road other deputies and SBI agents looked into a shooting at the senator’s home.

Sources tell WWAY Soles shot 22-year-old Thomas Kyle Blackburn in the leg when Blackburn and BJ Wright allegedly tried to break down the senator’s door around 5:20 Sunday afternoon. Both Blackburn and Wright, we are told, are legal clients of the senator.

Investigators finally left the scene around 10:30 Sunday night without saying anything to the media except to tell us that if we tried to go up this private drive that leads to the senator’s house, we could face trespassing charges.

Blackburn was taken to Loris Hospital in South Carolina for treatment. Law enforcement sources tell WWAY, the decision on whether to charge Soles with a crime will be left up to district attorney Rex Gore.

As of Sunday night, Blackburn was listed in fair condition, but the hospital would not release any information on him as of Monday morning. He got out of jail in June after serving a year and seven months for felony breaking and entering.

BJ Wright, as we reported a couple of weeks ago, received $8,000 from Senator Soles while serving time in prison, according to prison documents we obtained.

We will continue to follow this story Monday and bring you any new developments.
