“I love the movie ‘Field of Dreams,’ ” said Brett Friedlander, the StarNews sports correspondent and columnist. “I wore out three VHS copies before I finally broke down and bought the DVD.”And the part Friedlander likes best is Doc Graham, the ball player-turned-small-town-doctor played by Burt Lancaster in the 1989 picture.

Life Stories – Woman spent life in service to others

Vicki Hayes said her mother Betty Smith did not have a flashy career; however she still had an impact on people’s lives.Betty Freeman Smith died Aug. 8 from lung cancer at the age of 77.Smith survived two years of treatment including a clinical trial in Chapel Hill to help other lung cancer patients.
