“Bibles up. Draw your swords,” said Tammy Mokma to her six children. The kids – ages 6 to 14 – held their Bibles above their heads and listened for their Bible verse challenge during a “sword drill” a few weeks ago at their Holden Beach home.

Man struck and killed along MLK Parkway identified

WILMINGTON – Authorities released the name of a 24 year-old man who was struck and killed on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway Thursday night. According to Highway Patrol, Christopher Allen Stephens, of Wilmington, was walking along MLK Parkway and walked into the path of a pickup truck, which struck and killed him.

Stephens is believed to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, which happened around 8:45 p.m. near the Highway 133 exit.

According to Highway Patrol, Stephens had been riding in a car with his mother and started arguing with her. She let him out of the car and he started walking.

The driver who hit Stephens does not face charges.
