Funeral arrangements have been finalized by the family of the UNCW student who passed away last week.

John Edward Sackett III, known to friends as JT, was killed when lightning hit near the Oceanic Pier while he was swimming.

Visitation will be Wednesday and funeral services will be Thursday. Both will be held in Sackett’s hometown of Annapolis, Maryland.

Sackett’s friends are planning a local memorial service at a later date, but those details are still being finalized.

All donations will be put toward a scholarship fund that has been created in JT’s name.

Three behind bars after stealing from NHC communications tower

Three people are behind bars Tuesday night, charged with stealing copper and metal from a communications tower in New Hanover County.

Deputies arrested Douglas Cox, Melissa Smith, and Quinton Yanick after responding to a breaking and entering alarm at Hill Valley Walk around 2:00 Tuesday morning.

Copper wire, metal blocks, and burglary tools from the tower site were found in their vehicle.

It takes place at Anderson Elementary School at 455 Halyburton Memorial Parkway.

It runs from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
