Deputies checking on safe boating practices this Labor Day weekend

If you plan on hitting the open water, the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and fire services will be working together to make sure people are practicing safe boating this holiday weekend.

Deputies and fire personnel will be patrolling the waterways. “It seems like every holiday we have at least one or more boating incidents and the Masonboro Island issue is certainly high on the agenda of areas to be concerned about – boating, alcohol bad, bad things,” said Wrightsville Beach Town Manager Robert Simpson.

Before you head out on the water, officials remind boaters to have one life vest for each person on board, do not overload your boat, and of course designate a sober driver.
