Confiscated contraband destroyed by NHC Sheriff’s Department

The New Hanover County’s Sheriff’s Department spent the morning sifting through piles of contraband confiscated at the courthouse.

More than three thousand items ranging from forks to large knives, to handguns have been seized from courthouse visitors.

Sheriff Ed McMahon said seizing items that could potentially be used as a weapon is just one way of securing the courthouse. “You know you can’t be too careful. The courthouse can be a very volatile place,” said Sheriff McMahon. “We’re going to take every precaution we can, and make it as safe an environment as possible.”

The sheriff’s department destroyed all the items collected. They continue to warn courthouse visitors to leave all “questionable” belongings at home or in their car.

A local insurance agent is in trouble with the law. Don Bullard was arrested Tuesday night after a search of his Wilmington home.

Bullard is charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver ecstasy along with destroying evidence.

Bullard was taken to the New Hanover County jail, posted bond, and released.

The Wilmington police vice narcotics detectives say this is an on-going investigation.

Bullard was once one of State Farm’s top agents nationwide, selling insurance to more than 7,000 households in the Wilmington area. About a year ago, Bullard left State Farm over what he said were “philosophical reasons” to represent various agencies.

Sheriff Ingram answers questions about missing inmate

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Body

A WWAY exclusive interview with Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram answered questions as to how one jail inmate was mistakenly released on Sunday.

This mix-up has led to an internal investigation of the detention officer, as well as another investigation looking another inmate’s involvement in the escape.

Rosher Rodriguez-Aguilar was released from the Brunswick County jail Sunday, and a little too early.

The detention officer who checked him out, failed to properly check his identification. Rodriguez-Aguilar still had time left on his sentence.

“We do have human beings working here, so any time human error comes into play, there is the chance of this happening,” Sheriff Ingram said.

Officials also say Rodriguez-Aguilar may have stolen the identity of another inmate, Tony Torres.

Pictures are just one of many forms of photo identification officers have for each inmate. When released, detention officers have to check each form.

“With technology, you will eventually and inevitably have problems, and we know that, and that’s why we have redundancies built into our system to ensure that,” Ingram said.

Inmates wear a nametag with their picture. Their personal belonging bag also has their picture on it.

In this case, the Sheriff says someone just wasn’t paying attention and as a result, an inmate is roaming the streets as opposed to paying his dues behind bars.

“I think one is too many, and we believe that, and that one can be a dangerous individual,” Ingram said.

Authorities are still looking for the missing inmate.

They believe Rodriguez-Aguilar may be in northern Brunswick County or New Hanover.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 800-642-6379.
