What started as a weekend surfing trip to the Outer Banks ended tragically when a 15-year-old Pender County teen drowned Friday after his surfboard became entangled in a fishing pier.

Coast Guard Cutter Diligence headed to Md. shipyard

WILMINGTON | The North Carolina-based U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Diligence is beginning a seven month refurbishment program in Maryland.Officials said Friday the refurbishment program will renew the ship’s hull plating and replace communications and small boats.Diligence will return to Wilmington in the summer.

North Carolina offering rebates to truckers for diesel upgrades

The funds will be distributed by the N.C. Division of Air Quality as rebates to truckers who replace heavy-duty diesel trucks with 2010 compliant vehicles or purchase auxiliary power units for existing trucks.
