Thorough, advanced training essential to Munley’s success

Kimberly Munley, the civilian police officer credited with shooting and stopping the man accused of Thursday’s massacre at Fort Hood, Texas, got her start in law enforcement 10 years ago at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington.

PPD expands presence in China with acquisition

PPD Inc. said Friday it has acquired Excel PharmaStudies Inc., a contract research organization based in China.Wilmington-based PPD said in a news release that the acquisition “positions it to capitalize on the trememdous growth of the outsourcing market in Asia Pacific.”

Wilmington police investigating home invasion, robbery

Wilmington | Police are investigating a reported armed robbery in the 500 block of Cobblestone Drive.The victim, a 23-year-old male, reported that he woke up at about 4 a.m. Friday to find three men wearing ski masks in his apartment and standing over him. Two of the robbers were armed with handguns, according to police.

Kefi restaurant closing doors due to credit crunch

The popular Kefi restaurant in Wilmington says it may close because it is unable to get financing. The restaurant is on Eastwood Road at the approach to Wrightsville Beach, and is across the street from Crocker’s Marine, which closed last week because of the bad economy.

Retailers report sales increases

Sales at stores open at least a year rose 2.1 percent in October, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs tally, compared with a 4.2 percent drop in October 2008. Locally, some retailers saw that glimmer of hope in September and October.
