Use of gas chamber stalled for Brunswick County Animal Shelter

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

We have been following the installation of a refurbished gas chamber at the Brunswick County Animal Shelter.

Last week, an industrial hygienist inspected the machine to make sure it met state standards. One valve needs to be replaced before the machine can operate.

But Brunswick is not the only county that did not pass inspection.

New Hanover and Bladen counties both failed inspections by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Both counties have voluntarily agreed to stop using their chambers until they meet state standards.

GREENSBORO — Police are investigating the shooting death of a man at a North Carolina motel, the third shooting victim at the motel since Oct. 20.

Multiple media outlets reported police were called to a room at the LandMark Inn in Greensboro early Tuesday. Officers found the body of 28-year-old Willie James Bolden Jr.

Police have no suspects or motive.

Bolden is the third victim connected with the motel in the past five weeks.

Thirty-four-year-old Jermaine Bennett Tinsley was shot and killed at the motel on Oct. 20.

Forty-three-year-old Byron Robert Renwick was found shot in a pickup truck on the same street as the motel Nov. 3. Police determined he had been shot at the motel and drove a short distance away.

Two men have been charged with first degree murder in the earlier shootings.

FAYETTEVILLE — The father of a dead North Carolina girl isn’t second-guessing his decision to let 5-year-old Shaniya Davis live with the mother accused of prostituting her.

Bradley Lockhart said on NBC’s “Today” show Tuesday that he last saw Shaniya in early October as he left for an out-of-state work assignment. The girl moved in with 25-year-old Antoinette
Davis about a week later.

Lockhart says he regrets how the decision turned out, but thought he was making the right choice at the time. He says he doesn’t think he missed any signs that Shaniya would be at risk.

Davis was charged last week with human trafficking and child abuse by prostitution of her daughter.

Mario McNeill is charged with murder, rape and kidnapping.
