Leland launches effort to attract visitors

With its first hotel, Leland has gotten the state’s approval to adopt a room occupancy tax of 3 percent on the rate for a hotel room, according to Comfort Suites at Magnolia Greens general manager Barry Eagle.

Grant aids renovations at Thalian Hall

What used to be prime seating at Thalian Hall is now a giant mound of sand. Luckily, that’s not cause for alarm, just a sign that $3.6 million in renovations to the historic theater, which was built in 1858, are well under way.

Health Notes – Give blood, win round-trip flight tickets

WILMINGTON |The Wilmington Blood Center offers the chance to win airplane tickets for anyone who donates blood through Dec. 31.The center, located at 1102 S. 16th St., will give away three pairs of roundtrip Delta Air Lines domestic tickets to donors picked from the fall season.

Bald Head Island considers adding to smoking ban

The ordinance being considered at Bald Head Island in Brunswick County would ban smoking in any public place, defined as an enclosed area to which the public is invited or permitted.

Wilmington’s Bo Dean receives national recognition

The Chair of Wilmington’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is receiving national recognition.

The National Recreation and Park Association selected Bo Dean from nominees across the country to receive a community service award.

The award goes to a person who has demonstrated an ongoing contribution of time and effort to improving parks and recreation or for helping improve the lives of individuals with disabilities.

A city spokesperson said Dean has done both in Wilmington.
