Wrightsville Beach renourishment might have hit snag

Hampstead fisherman found dead offshore

A Hampstead man on a solo fishing trip Monday was found dead by the Coast Guard at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday in the water about 12 miles east of New Topsail Inlet. Kelly Wayne Cooper, 53, of Hampstead, left Surf City in his cabin cruiser to fish for grouper at 8 a.m. Monday. He was reported missing 12 hours later by his wife, Maureen.
