Friday, December 25th, 2009

By Shelby SebensShelby.Sebens@StarNewsOnline.com

Economy may be top indicator for 2010 N.C. elections

Friday, December 25th, 2009

By GARY D. ROBERTSONAssociated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – North Carolina’s awful economy and a new chapter of campaign and ethics investigations made governing difficult for Democrats in 2009. Those same troubles threaten to shift the state’s political landscape away from Democrats if the issues stick around for most of 2010.

Trip to movies a Christmas tradition for many

Going to the movies is a popular Christmas day routine for many families. And with Christmas rain, more people ventured out to catch a flick today. Movie-goers waited in line to get tickets to the movies, but many were not successful. The problem: Tickets were sold out.

Some of the new releases like Sherlock Holmes and Avatar brought people out in the rain, but if you did not get to the theater early enough, you did not get a ticket this Christmas.

"We came out to see the movie to get out of the house for a while, but the movie was sold out," Ed Shaw said. "But the funny part is we got out of line to talk about the next movie, and when we got back in line to buy tickets for the next hour, it was sold out, too, so we’re giving up for the day."

Many people changed their movie preference when they arrived at the theater to avoid wasting a drive to Mayfaire.

There are still 11 more days of Christmas to go, but some of you may already be taking down your decorations. If so, don’t just throw away your Christmas tree. Once you take off all the lights and decorations, you can recycle your tree at a number of places around our area.

In Bladen County, you can put your tree in the yard waste cans at any solid waste collection centers.

The Brunswick County Landfill in Supply will accept trees through January 31.

In Columbus County, drop trees in the leaf and limb containers at any convenience center.

There are four tree recycling drop off locations in New Hanover County. Myrtle Grove Middle School on Piner Road, American Property Specialists at 606 Sunnyvale Drive, Smith Creek Park on Harris off Gordon Road, and the New Hanover County Landfill on Highway 421 North. Those sites will accept trees through February 3.

And in Pender County, the convenience centers in Burgaw, Hampstead, Rocky Point and Willard will accept trees starting Monday through January 11.

Divine Diva – 2009’s most memorable stories

Friday, December 25th, 2009

By Amanda GreeneAmanda.Greene@StarNewsOnline.com

While wrapping last-minute presents this week, I was listening to John Lennon’s Happy Xmas (War is Over). (You know, the song where John and Yoko Ono whisper to each other “Happy Christmas Yoko” and “Happy Christmas John.”)I love the first lines of that song.
