Blood needed during Holidays

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

What better gift to give this Christmas than the gift of life? The American Red Cross Cape Fear Chapter is hosting Winter Days of Giving, a holiday push to get people to donate blood.

By donating blood you can save up to three lives. Thursday’s blood drive was not a very good turnout, they only had about six people show up at a time when blood is so desperately needed.

“My wife just died a few months ago and they gave her some blood, so I hope I’m replacing some of that,” said Bob Foster who donated blood Thursday.

“From the time of thanksgiving through new years, the donations tend to be low because people are getting their preparations for the holidays and they’re traveling and they don’t tend to come in as much, but every two seconds in the united states someone needs blood, and you’ve got people out there, accident victims, cancer patients, sickle cell disease, these people need blood every single day,” said Shannon Jordan of the American Red Cross.

The Winter Days of Giving lasts through January 3rd. You can donate this Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and throughout next week.

The American Red Cross is located on South 16th Street next to the railroad tracks.

Special giveaways during Winter Days of Giving at the 16th Street location are:
Dec. 18-31: An opportunity to win a pair of roundtrip Delta Air Lines tickets
Dec. 18-24: American Red Cross holiday ornament
Dec. 31-Jan. 3: American Red Cross 2010 calendar
Jan. 1-3: An opportunity to win a $1,000 gift card

Increased Holiday Hours: 12-6 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; 3-6 p.m. Tuesday; 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday; 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday and 12-4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Other local blood drives include:
Dec. 28: Wal-Mart Super Center, 12-4:30 p.m., 5135 Carolina Beach Road
Dec. 29: J Michael’s Philly Deli, 2-6:30 p.m., 609 Piner Road-Free Sandwich

Blood can be safely donated every 56 days. Most healthy people age 17 and older (16 with parental consent), who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood. Individuals 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements.

For more information on the Winter Days of Giving and on donating blood year-round at the American Red Cross, please call 1-800-GIVE LIFE or 254-GIVE or visit RedCrossBlood.org.
