Carolina Beach woman delivers Christmas early

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

Families waited in line for hours, in the dark cold, to make Christmas a little brighter for their kids this Christmas.

“I lost my job about three weeks ago, and I can’t afford Christmas for my family. It’s a blessing. I mean, I didn’t really have too many people to turn to,” said father Michael Archuleta.

The event organizer, Cyndi Farmer, had a list, and checked it twice. Some folks pre-registered, and a lucky few who walked up, were able to pick out some free toys for their little ones. With the help of volunteers, toys were arranged by age groups, ranging from newborns to sixteen years old.

Ashley Lawson said, “I’m grateful for it. I’m glad there’s actually somebody out here that’s willing to help us. Because right now it is hard to get them something. At least with this, they’ll be able to have a little bit of something under the tree.”

This is the thirteenth year Farmer has decided to help struggling families during the Christmas season. Typically, she partners with churches or schools, but this year she said she wanted to see the faces of the people she helped.

Jayna Smith was the winner of a raffle. The prize: a new bike. Just one of about a hundred families that will go away with gifts, that might otherwise may not have made it under the tree.

Cyndi Farmer said about 150 families got to choose Christmas gifts for their little ones.
