CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The struggling symphony orchestra in North Carolina’s largest city has hit the right note with donors and will play for another season.

The Charlotte Observer reported Wednesday that the Charlotte Symphony reached its year-end goal of raising $500,000 to match an anonymous $500,000 grant offered in August. The previously anonymous donors have identified themselves as Sandra and Leon Levine.

Since their challenge grant was announced in August, the symphony received nearly 100 donations of between $5 and $200,000.

Meeting the year-end goal means the symphony also expects to qualify for $900,000 from the local Arts & Science Council, which threatened to cut the symphony’s funding because of questions about its viability.

A search warrant for the Ogden home where an elderly woman lay dead since the spring reveals more clues about the case.

87 year old Blanche Roth’s body was removed from 612 Cherry Laurel Court last week. Roth’s daughter, Amy Stewart is charged with concealing her death. According to the warrant, Stewart’s father in law called 911, after his wife went to check on Roth.

EMS arrived to find Roth’s body lying on a bed, covered in blankets, in a mummified state. Stewart told deputies that her mother had been dead since June. Authorities took financial records from the home, along with air fresheners and odor eliminators.

Federal authorities are now looking into fraud charges. No word yet on how Roth died.

Sweepstakes parlors dodge NC gambling bans

RALEIGH, N.C. — A North Carolina appeals court ruling preserving a broad ban on video poker machines hasn’t stopped Internet sweepstakes parlors from offering the chance to win cash.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday that sweepstakes operators say their business isn’t gambling because patrons are paying for computer time or a phone card. They say the hands of video poker or results from virtual slot machines are promotional devices that coax people to buy a product and get a chance to win a prize.

The sweepstakes game are legal for now. A Superior Court judge in High Point has blocked police from cracking down on the sweepstakes parlors until a lawsuit over their legality is
resolved.

Legislative leaders say they plan to keep an eye on the lawsuit and the industry.
