Monday was a day of catch-up for air travelers across the country.

Winter weather grounded planes forcing passengers to reschedule their holiday plans. At ILM flights to New York and Philadelphia were canceled thanks to large snow falls.

This morning another flight to Philadelphia was canceled. The weather delays affected travelers trying to get into and out of the port city.

Jane Barry, who’s flight was canceled said, “I got here yesterday morning all ready to fly into Chicago and found out my flight out of here would have gone but the one connection in Charlotte was canceled, so here I am trying to get to Charlotte today.”

Another stranded traveler, Jordan Sutherland said, “My flight got canceled due to the storm so I had to drive to Manchester, New Hampshire. So I had to sleep at the airport. Weather was already bad there; I got two hours of sleep last night, but I made it.”

Passengers flock to ILM hoping to make it to their holiday destination

Monday, December 21st, 2009

All the stranded passengers looking to reschedule made for some big crowds at the airport today. After a weekend of wintry weather delayed flights throughout the country, passengers flocked to ILM hoping to make it to their holiday destination on Monday.

One holiday traveler, Frank Matthews, said “We’re here right now hoping we won’t have much of a delay. We’re going to Tampa; we’re going away from the storm.”

Another traveler, Margaret French, said “I don’t expect anything. “I don’t have the slightest idea what’s going to happen.”

After an early cancellation to Philadelphia, most of the flights at ILM departed on time, but holiday travel is hard enough without weather playing the role of grinch. Flight delays caused travel times to snowball out of control.

Another delayed holiday traveler, Matthew Aten, said “I have to stop over in Charlotte and this flight being delayed has made me miss my next flight, my connection, which has put me off 8 and a half hour to my next flight.”

Those who couldn’t save time, focused on saving money. Some shipped Christmas presents early and did their best to pack light.

“Everywhere I go has laundry facilities so I packed half as much,” Matthew added.

The delays weren’t just affecting those leaving ILM, arriving flights were also delayed, but those waiting to pick up their loved ones didn’t seem to mind.

“I’d wait hours if I had to it doesn’t matter,” John Coleman, said.

“It means everything because I don’t get to see her much.” Nickolas Owens, said.

Now if you are traveling for the holidays it’s important to remember not to wrap any of your gifts. Otherwise they’ll just have to be opened at security and it will take you a little bit more time to get on the plane. Regardless of where you’re going, leave yourself plenty of time to travel and you’ll have yourself a Merry Christmas.

Most airports have seen the number of passengers cut in half this year, but ILM expects to match last year’s record high. With fewer people choosing to fly overall, many airlines have waived the late book fees to help fill the seats, that mean’s it might not be too late to get a flight at a reasonable price.
