State Supreme Court steps in on release of two convicted killers

Monday, December 21st, 2009

The state Supreme Court stepped in Friday night, moments before two convicted killers were set to go free.

The court granted a request from the state Attorney General’s Office Friday afternoon, shortly before New Hanover County inmate, Alford Jones was to be released. Faye Brown, the other convicted killer is being held at a separate facility.

The ruling gives state attorneys another chance to make their arguments after two lower courts sided with the convicted killers. Jones and Brown were sentenced to life terms in the 1970’s but their lawyers argued under the definition of a life term – the two have served their sentence.
