UNCW athlete faces assault charges

A member of the UNC Wilmington track team was sentenced to 100 hours of community service Thursday in Chesapeake, Virginia along with two years of suspended jail time.

Kevin Webb is a freshman pole vaulter at UNC Wilmington. During his senior year in high school in Virginia he apparently bullied a special education classmate.

A Virginia newspaper reports that Kevin Webb even went to his classmate’s house and attacked him and the classmate’s father.

WWAY contacted UNC Wilmington Friday morning. We were told the university had just learned about Kevin Webb’s brush with the law.

Later, they released a statement to us saying, “The university just became aware of this issue, and we’re looking into the matter.”

Due to privacy issues, UNC Wilmington cannot say at this time how the Kevin Webb issue will be addressed, and just to clarify, Kevin Webb is a member of the Seahawk track team, but he is not on scholarship. The track season is scheduled to start January 16th.

US Army Reserves reads Polar Express to Wilmington students

The Polar Express is a popular children’s book this time of year, but not everyone is lucky enough to hear it told by an actual railroad conductor.

Friday morning, members of the U.S. Army Reserves Railway Transportation Battalion visited students at Wilmington Preparatory School. Conductors and locomotive engineers with the Army read the holiday classic to the children.

Students got to sip hot cocoa while they listened to the tale.

“I think they did a good thing, like a gracious thing, cause they read it for us and it was good. I liked it really,” said 2nd grader Taniaya Simmons.

This was more than community outreach for the members of the Army Reserve. They also used the Polar Express to teach an important safety message to children – that tracks and railroads are dangerous and should never be played on.
