A new year, a new gym

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

As 2010 quickly approaches, many people flock to fitness center to say goodbye to extra holiday pounds and hello to a healthy new year.

“January, February typically being very very busy and we see a little trail off but we like to keep people motivated,” said Gold’s Gym employee Niela Lyman.

Many gyms have specials running to intice consumers, but joining a gym can be costly, especially when your tied to a contract.

“Consumers don’t fully read the contract, they just go on the emotional sale itself, they sign off on that contract and then they have what we call buyers remorse,” said Better Business Bureau’s Kathy Graham.

Some gyms offer flexible agreements. “We like to customize to fit everyone’s needs,” said Lyman.

While other gyms don’t even require you to sign a contract or an agreement.

“We don’t have any contracts at the Y.M.C.A., I think that’s one of the greatest things for the community that they come in and see what we’re all about, try it and if they don’t like it, then we just have a 30-day notice,” Shannon Berg, Director of Operations.

Regardless if you sign into an agreement with a gym or not, Graham says you should put some thought into finding the right gym before you sign on any dotted line.
