Bladen County Deputies used some high-tech help to end a hostage situation early Wednesday morning when a man barricaded himself in a house with hostages. A sable helicopter from Wilmington came in to help when the suspect slipped from the back of the house. The pilot of the chopper picked him up with the infrared camera and was able to guide officers to the suspect back in the trees.

The suspect was armed with a pistol and shotgun, but was captured without incident. He will face multiple felony counts.

SEVEN DEVILS, N.C. — Authorities in western North Carolina say they have found the body of a woman who had been missing for more than a month.

Seven Devils Police Chief Edward Davis said Wednesday the body of Deana Elizabeth Schermerhorn was found buried near the house where she was living with her husband. Davis said authorities consider Schermerhorn’s husband, Christopher Warren Meade, a person of interest and are working with authorities in eastern Tennessee and western Virginia.

Authorities had been searching for Schermerhorn for weeks after family members asked police to check on her. They had recently moved to the area after a fire destroyed their home in Caldwell County.

Davis said authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office played Santa Wednesday night. They sponsored the sixth annual Make a Child Smile Operation at Murrayville Elementary. Deputies adopted 96 kids and through contributions, grants and donations, bought them Christmas presents. Santa even paid a visit to help give out the gifts.

“I think that it was nice of them to give them to us” said Katrina Harrison. They went out of their way to go out and buy these gifts for us, which is also great.

Felicia Harrison said “I can’t wait because I was not able to personally buy gifts this year, but wow just to be able to take pictures and see their expressions, I can tell already from the packaging that this is going to be wonderful.”

In addition to the gifts, the children also got to enjoy a holiday dinner.
