Ogden man confesses to murdering his roommate, sheriff’s office says

The body of Carmine Anthony Bruno, 68, was found Thursday night dead in the garage. He’d been beaten with a baseball bat on Tuesday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Local schools on a 2-hour delay; mostly rain expected this morning

The Wilmington area is expected to see mostly rain as a weather system moves through this morning.But isolated slick spots may develop on roads and bridges as temperatures drop into the 30s today. Northwest winds up to 25 mph will make it feel like it’s in the 20s this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Firewood sales heat up as cold stays

It has been a lucky cold snap for the Wilmington region.There has been the predictable increase in demand for firewood with purchases increasing each day the cold lingers, according to Louis Perretta.But there have been no reports of the chimney fires that too often accompany an increase in the use of firewood for home heating.

Area’s alcohol-related crashes up slightly in 2009, but fewer die

The number of people killed in alcohol-related crashes in the unincorporated areas of New Hanover and Brunswick counties fell considerably in 2009, when three people died, as compared with 10 during each of the prior two years, officials said.
