Sewer spill in Wilmington forces extended road closure

WILMINGTON | A sewer system overflow resulted in a spill of about 2,800 gallons at a manhole near the intersection of Huntington Ridge Road and Haymarket Lane in Wilmington. The spill entered a channel of Barnard’s Creek, according to a news release from the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority.

Gas leak forces evacuations, closes Market St. between Torchwood, Porters Neck roads

Market Street is closed in both directions between Torchwood and Porters Neck roads in northern New Hanover County because of a gas leak, according to a news release issued at 3:48 p.m. by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

Guilty plea in Wrightsville Beach attack

The man charged with a September attack in Wrightsville Beach that left the victim in a coma pleaded guilty to felony assault today. 28-year-old Hugh Sandlin attacked Judson Gee in a case of mistaken identity. Detectives say he thought Gee was someone else when he attacked him and took his bike. Sandlin apologized to Gee in court.

The judge sentenced Sandlin to four months in jail, three years probation, 100 hours of community service and ordered Sandlin to pay $50,000 in restitution for Gee’s medical expenses and lost wages. Gee has made a complete recovery, and endorsed today’s plea agreement.
