Fat Below the Waist

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Research has long shown that people who carry their fat around the middle, so called ‘apple’ shapes have greater health problems than people who carry their fat around the rear, the so called ‘pear’ shapes.

But now doctors are suggesting that fat around the hind quarters may even be beneficial for health.

The type of fat that collects on the thighs and rear end takes a longer time to build up and break down than abdominal fat does.

The body uses both types of fat to increase energy, but breaking down belly fat triggers the release of many chemicals that cause inflammation whereas metabolizing lower body fat does not have this risk.

In fact, fat around the hindquarters may protect the heart – scientists have found that it can act as a long-term trap for fatty acid molecules that could otherwise clog up blood vessels throughout the body.

But experts caution this isn’t a license to eat junk food, as fat collects more quickly around the waist where it is dangerous for health.

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. — Officials have shut down the Port of Morehead City and are recommending an evacuation of the city’s downtown area after containers with highly explosive materials were punctured.

City police spokeswoman Amy H. Thompson said Tuesday that nine containers were damaged. Authorities did not immediately disclose the contents of the containers or their size.

Police recommended people leave the area and those near the port were being told to stay away from windows and doors. The police department sent officers downtown to knock on doors to relay alert and evacuation recommendations.

The Morehead port is one of the deepest on the East coast. Its Web site says its top import last year was sulfur products and the top export was phosphate.

WILMINGTON, N.C. — A made-in-Wilmington Web series that attracted fans in 94 countries and then was broadcast in 16 European countries is coming back home.

The StarNews of Wilmington reported that, beginning Tuesday, “Port City P.D.” will air on Tuff TV, a channel available in cities that include Dallas; Little Rock, Ark.,; Wichita, Kan.; and Key West, Fla. It also will begin airing on AMGTV, another satellite network, on Jan. 26.

Producer and star Sean O’Rourke says the show has the potential to be seen in more than 70 million U.S. households.

The show tells the story of cops dealing with the death of one of their own and the killer who was still on the loose. The episodes originally ranged from 15 minutes to 35 minutes, but the America Unleashed satellite network turned them in 24-minutes shows, then broadcast them in Europe.
