Retiree to oversee Pender County emergency services

Pender County has hired a new director of emergency management. Charles “Tom” Collins, 56, previously worked as manager of the eastern branch of the N.C. Division of Emergency Management for 13 years, according to a news release. He’ll earn $57,750 in the Pender job.

Fatal accident driver awaiting trial on previous alcohol-related incident

Travis A. Middaugh was stopped Dec. 12 and was charged with driving after consuming alcohol under 21, speeding (73 mph in a 45-mph zone), possession of an open container and carrying a concealed gun.

New Hanover school board will consider seeking more forfeited cash from Sheriff’s Office

Since the fall of 2005, judges in local courts have ordered a total of $323,529.28, seized during criminal investigations, be forfeited to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office to be put to law enforcement use, according to documents provided by the sheriff’s office.

Pender commissioners balk at crackdown on smoking

Smokers won’t be sent off Pender County property if they want a quick puff since commissioners opted to scuttle a proposed ordinance Monday.The ordinance was supported by the county’s board of health and presented as an information item by Jack Griffith, director of the health department.
