Woman whose death was concealed by family died of heart failure

New Hanover County | Heart disease killed an 87-year-old Cherry Laurel Court woman whose June death wasn’t reported until December, according to an autopsy released Thursday by the state Medical Examiner’s Office.

Leland | Leland residents can now get crime and traffic alerts sent directly to their cell phones.Leland police joined Nixle, a free network that digitally connects government and law enforcement agencies with the public. Anyone can sign up to receive a participating agency’s updates via text messages and e-mail.

ALE focuses efforts on underage drinking

Three downtown bars were charged last week with serving alcohol to a person under the age of 21. It was part of an Alcohol Law Enforcement investigation into whether bars were complying with the law.

School redistricting map unresolved

Myrtle Grove Middle student Joiesha Bush currently has a 20-minute bus ride from Myrtle Grove every day, covering about seven miles each way. The most recent district map puts her in Holly Shelter Middle School in Castle Hayne, twice the distance.
