Blueberry Festival cookbook wins award

Pender County | The cookbook of the N.C. Blueberry Festival in Burgaw won the award for “Best Merchandise” at the recent conference and trade show of the N.C.-S.C. Association of Festivals and Events in Charlotte.

Christian Women’s Job Corps helps people find way out of poverty

Mary Ellen Bowman helps women through tough times. She can identify with the women because she’s been there herself.Bowman is director of the Christian Women’s Job Corps, a faith-based nonprofit that helps women move from poverty and dependency to being self-sufficient. They do this through classes, Bible study and mentoring.

Body found near Shipyard and 17th; police on scene

Wilmington police are the scene on South 17th Street where a body was found around noon today.The man’s body was found between a building and fence near the Shipyard Boulevard intersection. Authorities were investigating whether it was a homeless man who died of exposure but said it was too early to tell what caused his death.

Weather affects incoming, outgoing flights at ILM

All US Airways flights between Wilmington and Philadelphia and Wilmington and New York LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday are canceled because of inclement weather up north, said Gary Broughton, operations director at Wilmington International Airport.Also, Tuesday’s 7:21 p.m. flight to LaGuardia, Flight 3005, is canceled, he said.
