Body found in woods off Medical Center Drive

Wilmington | The body of a 50-year-old Wilmington man was found Saturday afternoon in the woods adjacent to Medical Center Drive.Someone walking in the woods found the body of a man who was later identified as Barry Wayne Viar.

Tuesday’s rain could turn to snow early Wednesday

Snow could again fall in Coastal North Carolina, but accumulation is not likely, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.Up to a half of an inch of rain is expected to fall Tuesday, and it could turn to snow after 4 a.m. Wednesday, according to the weather service’s forecast Monday night.

Teenage girl fights with masked intruder who awakened her

Wilmington | A 15-year-old girl told police she woke up early Sunday to see a masked man standing over her.The girl said she fought with the man and pulled off his mask until he ran out of her residence in the 6500 block of Greenville Loop Road, a news release from the police department said.

Wilmington police chief says repeat offenders committing bulk of crimes

On Monday, WPD Chief Ralph Evangelous told City Council members that North Carolina’s judicial system isn’t tough enough to deter burglars and thieves and that continued cuts in the prison system will only make property crime worse.
