No one injured in fire in northern New Hanover County

Firefighters battled a fire Tuesday afternoon at a house on Governors Road in Wilmington after an explosion happened in a garage attached to the home.The home was vacated, and no one was injured in the fire, said Matt Davis, fire marshal for New Hanover County.

Wilmington council votes to purchase Inland Greens

Wilmington | Wilmington City Council voted 6-0 Tuesday night to approve the purchase of the Inland Greens Golf Course property off of Cardinal Drive for $550,000, with certain conditions.City spokeswoman Malissa Talbot said Councilwoman Kristi Tomey didn’t vote because she lives in that area.– Patrick Gannon

Final public hearing on terminal groins Wednesday

Department of Labor investigates Corning fire

The N.C. Department of Labor, which enforces federal occupational health and safety rules in the state, has launched an investigation into Sunday’s fire at Corning.But company officials said they don’t mind the scrutiny from regulators.

UNCW scientists take rare right whale photographs

An endangered right whale was photographed giving birth by a team of scientists from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Duke University on Saturday, near where the Navy plans to establish a training range off the coast of northern Florida.
