Despite tourism decline, New Hanover visitors spent $422 million in 2008

Southport business owners rally around national consumer initiative

Southport’s small-business owners have begun to rally around a national initiative called The 3/50 Project in an effort to stimulate the local economy. Word about the campaign spread rapidly after the Southport Oak Island Chamber of Commerce sent an e-mail to all members introducing the concept.

Two men shot in Wilmington early Sunday morning

Two men were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center early Sunday morning after being shot, according to a news release from the Wilmington Police Department.Officers on patrol heard gunfire about 4 a.m. and found two men who had been shot near North Fourth and Swann streets. The men were in surgery Sunday morning, the release said.
