Police investigate shots fired into home

Wilmington | A 55-year-old man told police he and his family were in their home in the 700 block of North 30th Street when they heard gunshots shortly after 10 p.m. Monday and called 911.Wilmington Police Department officers who went to the scene found two bullet holes in the home, according to a news release.

UPDATE: More heavy rain on the way tonight

Heavy rains are moving across southern Pender and northern New Hanover counties.The National Weather Service said a cluster of showers was producing heavy rain over Point Caswell, or 20 miles northwest of Wilmington, and was moving southeast at 15 mph.

Approaching showers to drop 1 inch of rain in half an hour

A cluster of showers moving east at 25 mph across Boiling Spring Lakes will reach the south end of Wilmington and Pleasure Island by 5 p.m. today, the National Weather Service in Wilmington says.The weather service says to expect heavy rainfall of up to 1 inch in less than half an hour, which will cause ponding of water on roads.- Jim Ware

Pender requests independent review of county’s health department

Pender County officials plan to ask an outside agency to come in and review the county’s health department.County commissioners voted unanimously after meeting in closed session earlier this week to seek the review after they received complaints about the department’s dealings with employees.

Man facing charges for possession of large amount of heroin

Wilmington | A man is in the New Hanover County jail in lieu of a $1 million bond after detectives allegedly found 149 bags of heroin in his possession.Devin Nathan McLean, 22, was charged with trafficking heroin, possession with intent to sell and deliver heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.
