Carolina Beach State Park hosts poisonous plants and animals program

Even on a casual hike, there’s danger. Spiders like the brown recluse and black widow are common around here, as are snakes. Poison ivy, sumac, or oak can really ruin your week, too. And there are plenty of snakes to look out for – six different types of poisonous snakes live in our area.

Senior Resource Day focuses on services and care

The first annual Senior Resource Day will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 9 at the First Baptist Church Activity Center, 1939 Independence Boulevard. The event is free and open to all senior citizens.

Three local schools are on lockdown while authorities search for a suspect who ran into the woods behind the Verizon building on Shipyard Boulevard, according to Cpl. Jerry Brewer, a spokesman for the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
