Police update neighbors on Johnson homicide case

Representatives from the Wilmington Police Department held a community meeting Wednesday night for residents of the Pine Valley area, the neighborhood where Carol Ann Johnson, 59, was discovered dead July 4 by her fiance. Johnson’s death is being investigated as a homicide.

Carolina Beach innkeepers share passion for bed and breakfast

Charlotte and Noah Gunnell attached a round "CB" sticker to the rear window of their yellow 1989 Volvo station wagon, next to one shaped like Oregon, soon after they drove it across the country for their new job and home. It’s the kind of sticker a lot of Carolina Beach locals and faithful tourists place on their windows, and it shows the Gunnells have settled comfortably in their new roles as innkeepers of the beach town’s only bed and breakfast.

Higher standards mean fewer local schools meet AYP this year

School districts in Southeastern North Carolina are warning not to scrutinize this year’s preliminary Adequate Yearly Progress requirements too closely. The results, which were released statewide Thursday, are part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act and analyze students’ competency in reading and math. The goals in each category were ratcheted up this year compared to previous years.
