AT&T adding cell phone capacity around NC colleges

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — AT&T has added cell phone capacity to areas surrounding five North Carolina colleges.

The company announced Tuesday that it added broadband capacity for the campuses of Duke University, East Carolina University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina Charlotte.

The company says it added the capacity to support some of its heaviest users and improve the performance of their devices.

AT&T’s North Carolina President Cynthia Marshall says the company realizes the importance of mobile broadband, especially for students who use tablets and netbooks in their classes.

The North Carolina improvements are part of the company’s plan to invest roughly $20 billion this year in its wireless and wireline networks.

US marshals raid NC food business after FDA check

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

DURHAM, NC (AP) — US marshals have seized food from a Durham warehouse that supplies Chinese, Mexican and Indian food to restaurants after inspectors found problems with pests.

The Herald Sun of Durham reported Tuesday that the US Food and Drug Administration inspected Chan’s Food Service this month and found a widespread rodent infestation at the company’s warehouse.

FDA spokeswoman Pat El-Hinnawy says the Durham raid is one of just three or four food seizures by US marshals in the United States in the past year. She says the FDA’s regulatory authority applies only to food sold in interstate commerce, with states investigating other food safety issues.

Anthony Chan manages the business and says he’s working with the FDA. He wouldn’t say which restaurants he supplies.

Obama cabinet secretaries slated to visit NC

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Two officials from the Obama administration are traveling to North Carolina to get a first-hand look at damage caused by Hurricane Irene.

US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack planned to survey crop damage Tuesday. Gov. Bev Perdue, U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan and state Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler will join the cabinet secretaries in Manteo.

Napolitano and Vilsack are also scheduled to visit Richmond, VA, to tour the state’s emergency operations center and meet with local officials.

Residents who evacuated Ocracoke Island last week can start returning Tuesday on ferries that also are carrying utilities workers and damage assessment teams.

People who own property on Ocracoke but don’t live there are not being allowed on the island until utilities, roads, and other infrastructure are ready.
