Traffic moving again after Cape Fear Memorial Bridge gets stuck

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Traffic is moving again after the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge was stuck in the open position for more than an hour this afternoon.

The Department of Transportation said it started sending crews to check out the bridge around 2:30 p.m., but they also got stuck in traffic. Officials have no idea what caused the problem that stopped traffic in and our of Wilmington for an hour and 15 minutes.

“It’s just keeping me from doing service calls,” said HVAC repairman Marty Fulford as he sat in traffic.

Now that traffic is moving, crews will inspect the bridge, which was built in 1969, to see why it would not close.
