FIRST ON 3: Memorable day for women who gave birth during Hurricane Irene

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Irene brought with her extreme conditions that couldn’t be controlled: torrential downpour, whipping winds and for some, labor pains. New Hanover Regional Medical Center reported 12 deliveries of newborns during the storm, 30-40 percent more than usual.

“I did not think I’d have a baby during a hurricane,” Kristen Elliott said.

As conditions worsened through the night Elliott’s contractions grew stronger. She finally delivered her baby girl, Georgia Anne, just before 9 a.m.

“I was just praying that the hurricane was not gonna be that bad and the power didn’t get knocked out or anything, the roof coming off or nothing,” Elliott said. “That was the only thing I was worried about: everybody being safe.”

Andi Curtis was expecting her second child, but not expecting she would come as Irene pushed in.

“I just thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, this is so cliché.’ Everybody told me she was gonna come during the hurricane, and I really did not think at all that she would,” Curtis said.

Her labor went quickly with no time for an epidural, and just before midnight Parker Elisabeth was born.

“I think as soon as I was able to leave the labor and delivery room, there was another woman right behind me,” Curtis said.

Both mothers say the storm was overshadowed by their task at hand.

“Sometimes I did hear wind gusts and a little bit of rain coming through the walls, but that was pretty much it,” Elliott said.

“We could hear the rain hitting the windows, but during delivery, I really wasn’t paying attention to the weather,” Curtis said.

August 27: a birthday for these babies that was anything but dull.

We’ve heard reports that two other mothers who gave birth during the storm are considering using Irene as a middle name for their newborn daughters.
