WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hurricane Irene finally moved out of North Carolina over night, but its effects are still being felt. As of 10 a.m., Progress Energy says 170,200 of its customers in eastern North Carolina still do not have power. That is significantly lower than the peak level of outages, which was 280,000 customers at 2 p.m. yesterday.
About 12,800 customers in New Hanover County still do not have electricity, though that is down from about 58,000 homes and business yesterday morning. WWAY has heard of pockets of outages, including the King’s Grant neighborhood and parts of Colonial Drive.
Progress Energy says Onslow County has 12,200 outages along with 6,000 in Duplin County. No other county in our area has more than 5,000 outages.
North Carolina’s electric cooperatives say they’ve restored power to 43,000 of the 109,000 customers who lost service during the storm. Now that the wind has died down, crews will be better able to do their work.
Four County Electric Membership Corporation says as of 6:30 a.m., only about 800 members were without power. Four County says the remaining outages are scattered across the service area and are the result of fallen trees, limbs and broken poles. Crews responded to outages as early as Friday afternoon and worked into Friday night until worsening weather conditions made it unsafe to do so.
