Red Cross closes area shelters, two remain open

THIS INFORMATION FROM A NEWS RELEASE SENT TO THE WWAY NEWSCHANNEL 3 NEWSROOM

WILMINGTON, NC — The Red Cross has closed some of the evacuation shelters opened yesterday for Hurricane Irene. All residents staying at these shelters have safely returned to their homes.

The following shelters have closed:

BRUNSWICK COUNTY – All shelters closed
·North Brunswick High School
·West Brunswick High School
·South Brunswick High School

NEW HANOVER COUNTY
·Noble Middle School – closed

PENDER COUNTY
·Malpass Corner Elementary School – closed
·Topsail Elementary – closed

COLUMBUS COUNTY – All shelters closed
·East Columbus High
·Edgewood Elementary
·Guideway Elementary

The following shelters remain open until further notice:

NEW HANOVER COUNTY
·Dorothy B Johnson Elementary School – 1100 McRae St. Wilmington, NC 28401

PENDER COUNTY
·Burgaw Middle School – 500 South Wright Street, Burgaw, NC 28425 (pet-friendly shelter- dogs and cats only, owners must stay at the shelter with their animals, please bring pet’s food)

Topsail Island curfew lifted; cleanup process begins

TOPSAIL ISLAND, NC (WWAY) – Although the mandatory curfew has come and gone, the wrath of Hurricane Irene is still being felt on Topsail Island. People were quick to make their way to the beach after the curfew was lifted to see what Irene left behind. And they were not disappointed.

The damage around the area was minimal, with little structural damage and minor flooding. A gas station lost its awning and many power lines were strewn in the streets, but many folks we spoke with said they had power throughout the storm.

Wastewater spill at Carolina Beach

This information is from a news released sent to the WWAY NewsChannel 3 newsroom.

Carolina Beach — The Town of Carolina Beach had a wastewater spill on August 27th of an undetermined amount from various locations throughout the wastewater collection system in Carolina Beach. The spill is still occurring and the total amount will be released when it can be determined. The untreated wastewater spilled into Myrtle Grove Sound and possibly the Carolina Beach Lake. The discharge was a result of heavy rain and flooding that was experienced throughout the area caused by hurricane Irene.

The Division of Water Quality was notified of the event on August 27, 2011 and is reviewing the matter. For information contact the Town of Carolina Beach, Utility Department (910) 458-8291.
