Obama to visit Apex, NC State University

Monday, September 12th, 2011

APEX, NC (AP) — President Obama will visit a small business in Apex and speak at North Carolina State University in his latest trip to the state.

The White House said Monday that Obama will visit WestStar Precision in Apex on Wednesday, a stop that is closed to the public. He then will speak about his proposed American Jobs Act at NCSU’s Reynolds Coliseum.

Tickets are available both to NCSU students and the general public for that event on a first-come, first-served basis.

Obama is traveling the country to promote the nearly $450 billion jobs plan, which was unveiled last week in a speech to Congress.

North Carolina, which Obama won in 2008, will likely be a hotly contested state in next year’s presidential election.

FIRST ON 3: B.J. Wright has another brush with the law over the weekend

Monday, September 12th, 2011

COLUMBUS CO., NC (WWAY) — B.J. Wright is on the radar again. Sunday morning around 1:00 a.m., he was riding with a woman names Crystal Gail Lee when state troopers say Lee ran a checkpoint. They chased Lee and Wright and eventually Lee decided to pull over.

But troopers say as they approached the car, she tried to drive off again, swerving and hitting one of them.

Troopers chased her again, shoving her car off the road. One trooper hit a four foot deep ditch, and flipped his car completely over – landing back on all four wheels.

Wright has told the media he had an ongoing sexual relationship with former State Senator R.C. Soles and that Soles has given him hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years.

Lee faces multiple charges including DWI, assault on an officer and driving without a license.

At this point, no charges have been filed against Wright.

NC gay marriage amendment OKd by House committee

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A divided North Carolina House committee has sent to the floor a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage if voters statewide agree next spring.

The House Rules Committee approved Monday the question after about a half-hour of debate. The full House was expected to take up the matter later in the day. Three-fifths of the House members must vote yes twice on the measure before it can move on to the Senate.

The Republican chairman of the committee didn’t allow any public comment from the audience about the bill. House Democratic leader Joe Hackney said the question was being rushed through and its contents could have long-term unintended consequences.

The referendum would be held on next May’s primary date.
