Hampstead man arrested after death of his step-father

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY)– A family controversy leads to a breaking and entering and a death. It happened in the northern part of Hampstead early Wednesday morning.

The Pender County Sheriff’s Office says that 67-year-old Roger Arnold Mock Sr. was found dead inside his home at 329 Electric Lane.

Investigators say that the case progressed quickly and that an arrest was made around 2:15 p.m. The man arrested in connection to the shooting was 39-year-old James Gorby, the step-son of the victim.

Gorby has been taken to the law enforcement center in Burgaw as the sheriff’s office continues their investigation.

“Rather not get into motive right now,” said Pender County Sheriff Carson Smith. “Again the arrest has just been made we really haven’t had time to interview the suspect. Don’t want to get into motive, even that is developing.”

Some family members at the scene said that Mock Sr. was a kind, church going man who was only trying to help his step-son through a drug problem.

The Pender County Sheriff’s Office also says that James Gorby will have his first appearance in fron of a magistrate Thursday morning.
