Firefighters hurt fighting apartment fire

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two Wilmington firefighter were taken to the hospital with minor burns while fighting a fire at Osprey Landing Apartments on Fall Drive. A WFD spokesman said the firefighters were hurt by falling debris.

Investigators have determined the fire was an accident caused by an outdoor heating/AC unit. Firefighters say the building suffered $200,000 worth plus $100,000 damage to contents.

The Red Cross is helping the people who lived in the eight units in the building, who were affected.

The injured firefighters have been placed on injury leave for the rest of the weekend and will be re-evaluated on Monday for duty status. The burns were caused by falling embers that managed to get under there protective clothing.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s been a long couple of weeks for New Hanover County Commissioners, culminating last night in Brian Berger refusing to resign as the other commissioners requested and then blaming them for the distractions and drama his personal issues have caused.

Commission Vice Chair Jason Thompson sat down with WWAY tonight to talk about Berger’s issues and accusations. He discussed the widening rift between Berger and fellow commissioners, Berger’s refusal to take responsibility for his own problems and where the commission goes from here.
