Bladen Co. student wins national art contest

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

ELIZABETHTOWN, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — Lesley Portillo’s artistic talents are playing off in a big way! Lesley, a senior at East Bladen High School, recently won $1,000 for one of her drawings. Last year, Lesley completed an assignment for Mr. Ron Warren’s Art III class; it was a white-on-black pencil drawing of Christina Aguilera.

“I took me a couple of weeks to complete the assignment,” Lesley recalled, “but when I was done, I was pleased with the way it turned out, and Mr. Warren must have thought it looked pretty good, too, because I got a high grade on the assignment.”

But, that’s not the end of the story. Mr. Warren submitted Lesley’s drawing to “EdSteps,” an educator-led effort to collect, review, and publish student work. “EdSteps” allows teachers and instructors to use submitted student work for assessment and for teaching other students.

Lesley gave her permission for her drawing to be used by the education-centered program, and then her picture of Christina Aguilera was entered in a drawing contest for a $1,000 prize.

“I just couldn’t believe it when I won the money,” Lesley said. “It came at just the right time because I used some of it to pay for all my senior expenses this year.”

“Lesley is a very gifted student artist,” Mr. Warren said, “and she’s a joy to have in the classroom.”

Lesley is the daughter of David and Maria Portillo of Elizabethtown.
