Thalian Hall hosts Taste of the Town.

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

WILMINGTON NC (WWAY) — Thalian Hall is always a treat but tonight it was tastier than ever.

A fundraiser called Taste of the Town combined Wilmington’s favorite arts venue with lots of opportunities to eat downtown on Tuesday night.

Patrons meet at Thalian Hall, bought a ticket and dispersed to find their way through a choice of dining establishments.

Jason Godwin runs the Eat Spot downtown and he says the idea is a winner. “I think it’s a great opportunity for restaurants as well as patrons, for restaurants to showcase what they do and can offer. For patrons it’s an opportunity to get out and see some places, try some restaurants that they have never been to. I think all in all it’s a great thing for the downtown area.”

In addition to the Eat Spot you could taste your way through more that a dozen local restaurants. All proceeds benefit Thalian Hall.

Wilmington businesses offer e-waste recycling

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you have some dusty old monitors taking up space in your home, Your Computer Friends and PODS will take them off your hands for a small fee.

According to the EPA, e-waste represents two percent of waste in United States landfills, but equals 70 percent of overall toxic waste. Your Computer Friends, a computer repair business at 3816 Oleander Drive in Wilmington, is accepting electronics that should be recycled all this week until Friday at 6 p.m.

“With technology increasing as fast as it does, doubling every year, there’s a lot of equipment out there that just isn’t being recycled properly,” Your Computer Friends owner Susan Kadar said. “The estimate is only 25 percent of electronics are recycled correctly.”

There is a $10 fee for old CRT monitors and TVs because they contain toxic gases, but newer flat-screen or LCD monitors and other electronics are free of charge.
