Doritos creator to be buried with chips

Monday, September 26th, 2011

DALLAS, TX (AP) — Arch West, a retired Frito-Lay marketing executive credited with creating Doritos as the first national tortilla chip brand, has died in Dallas at age 97.

A statement issued by the West family says he died Tuesday at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. A graveside service is scheduled for Oct. 1. Daughter Jana Hacker of Allen tells The Dallas Morning News the family plans on “tossing Doritos chips in before they put the dirt over the urn.”

West was a marketing vice president for Dallas-based Frito-Lay in 1961 when, while on a family vacation near San Diego, he found a snack shack selling fried tortilla chips. Hacker says her father got a tepid corporate response to the tortilla chip idea but conducted marketing research that led to the Doritos rollout.

NC teen tells 911 he shot father, stepmother

Monday, September 26th, 2011

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Police say a 15-year-old is in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of his father and stepmother in Mecklenburg County.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they found the bodies of a man and woman in a house after receiving two 911 calls early Monday.

Police say a caller first told 911 dispatchers that he needed to talk with police but didn’t say why. The same person called 911 again and police say he told the dispatcher he had shot his father and stepmother. He said he would wait for police at a nearby street corner.

Officers found the teen about three-quarters of a mile from the shooting scene.

Neither the victims nor the teen have been identified.

Elon to hold services for Jewish high holy days

Monday, September 26th, 2011

ELON, NC (AP) — Elon University will observe the Jewish High
Holy Days with services for the first time.

The Times-News of Burlington reported reported that a rabbi from
New York will lead services for the holy
days, which begin Wednesday with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year
and end Oct. 8 with Yom Kippur, the day of atonement.

Hillel campus director Nancy Luberhoff says Elon has about 350
to 400 students who consider themselves Jewish and about 20 Jewish
faculty and staff members. She says Alamance County has no
synagogue so Hillel is the only Jewish institution there.

Hillel provides support for Jewish students on campuses.

Previously, students traveled to synagogues in Greensboro or to
the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for services.
