Strickland reaches plea deal, staying in jail

TABOR CITY, NC (WWAY) — Allen “Frog” Strickland will be staying in jail a few more months after pleading guilty Friday to charges stemming from an incident at the home of former state Sen. R.C. Soles earlier this year.

Under the deal, Strickland receives a sentence of 240 days in jail. He gets credit for 25 days already served.

Strickland made the deal the day his case was supposed to go to trial. The prosecution’s witness list included Soles, who had spoken on the teen’s behalf at a bond hearing last month.

BCSO identifies suspect in Wednesday shooting

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Brunswick County Sheriff’s detective have identified the suspect in a shooting Wednesday night.

Justin Antwain Garvin, 19, is wanted for assault in a shooting at Stevenson Mobile Home Park in Stevenson Road in Supply. Investigators say just after 10 p.m. Wednesday shots were fired from a car into a house. One person was injured.

Deputies are currently searching for Garvin, who they think is still in the Supply area.

Garvin is already do in court next month on charges of disorderly conduct, assault and battery and injury to real property according to court records.

Anyone with information on the where Garvin is should call the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office at (910) 253-2777 and ask for Det. Tony Caison.

Battleship named Attraction of the Year

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Seven decades after entering World War II, the Battleship North Carolina has earned another honor. Last night the North Carolina Travel Industry Association honored the Battleship as its 2011 Attraction of the Year.

The purpose of the annual award is to recognize a North Carolina visitor attraction that exemplifies excellence, innovation and sets the standard for an exceptional visitor experience. Past recipients of NCTIA’s Attraction of the Year award are: Grandfather Mountain (2010), Chimney Rock Park (2009), Blue Ridge Parkway (2008), and the North Carolina Museum of Art (2007).

The Battleship, which serves as North Carolina’s World War II Memorial, celebrates its 50th anniversary in Wilmington October 2.
