FIRST ON 3: East Columbus HS releasing early after water main break

LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) — East Columbus High School is sending students home early today because of a water main break. Principal Mark Bridgers says the school day will end at 1:30 p.m.

Bridgers says the water system in the Town of Lake Waccamaw experienced a water main break. He says everything has been going fine at the school today, but students will be sent home early as a precaution and all afterschool activities are canceled.

The school will be on its normal schedule tomorrow, Bridgers said. Students will be given bottled water and hand sanitizer in case there are any lingering problems with the water.

The school district says East Columbus High School is the only school affected by the water issue.

Fishing-related sea turtle deaths down 90%

The number of sea turtles killed in the United States after run-ins with fishing gear has decreased 90 percent since 1990, according to a recent study by Duke University and Conservation International.But researchers say the explanation for the drop in snagged turtles – known as turtle bycatch – is somewhat murky.

Locally filmed TV shows premiere, but production moves west

Wilmington’s role in two new TV series will be front and center during the next week when the shows’ pilots premiere.But the Port City’s prominence will fade from future episodes as both productions decided the West Coast was where they wanted to be permanently.

Shooting suspect sought by Brunswick detectives

Brunswick County sheriff’s detectives are looking for help tracking down the suspect in a shooting that occurred early Tuesday morning in Bolivia, according to a news release.
