Congressman says feds happened upon American al-Qaida member

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Associated Press

GARDEN CITY, NY (AP) — A New York congressman says federal authorities became aware of an al-Qaida propagandist killed last week in Yemen when he contacted other suspected terrorists on Long Island in recent years.

Rep. Peter King tells The Associated Press that 25-year-old Samir Khan was not the original target of investigators.

King says Khan “came on their radar” between 2007 and 2009 when he was seen meeting with two terror suspects on Long Island.

King says those two are still being watched.

Newsday reported Friday that Khan had lived on Long Island for about a decade before moving to North Carolina in 2004.

Khan was killed last week in a US airstrike in Yemen. He was traveling with American-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, described as a leader of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.
