New Mexico man pleads guilty to offering semen-tainted yogurt

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – A New Mexico grocery store worker has pleaded guilty to charges that he handed out a semen-tainted yogurt sample at an Albuquerque market.

Anthony Garcia faced charges of adulterating food with semen and making false statements to federal investigators during a criminal investigation. He made the plea Thursday in federal court in Albuquerque.

Garcia is accused of handing out the yogurt sample at a Sunflower Market in Albuquerque in January. Police say the 32-year-old man was linked to the yogurt through DNA samples.

Under the terms of his plea agreement, Garcia faces up to three years of imprisonment to be followed by three years of supervised release.

Sentencing has not been scheduled.

Leland Town Council meets tonight to discuss “personnel actions”

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — After an ongoing WWAY NewsChannel 3 Investigation into allegations of misconduct and corruption within the Leland Police Department, the Leland Town Council has called a special meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. to discuss what Mayor Pro Tem Brenda Bozeman calls "personnel actions."   Leland residents are encouraged to be at the meeting.

Councilwoman Martha Currie originally asked Leland Mayor Walter Futch to call the meeting but he refused. Bozeman then went behind Currie and called the meeting with Councilwoman Pat Batleman’s support.

This will be the first public meeting where any town council member has responded to our ongoing stories.  Most refuse to return our calls for comment.

Here’s is a complete list of the stories we’ve reported on so far:

UNC system president formally takes office

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — The president of the University of North Carolina system will highlight his goals for the 17 campuses when he formally takes office.

Tom Ross will take his oath Thursday at NC A&T State University in his hometown of Greensboro. He’s being sworn in nine months after he began the job.

Ross took the helm of the UNC system in January. By summer, lawmakers had cut state funding for the 17 campuses by $414 million, an overall reduction of almost 16 percent. UNC-Chapel Hill took the biggest cuts, at almost 18 percent.

Ross has said it’s the university system’s duty to provide quality education, no matter the economic situation.
